From the time of the first appearance of human presence in Crete, items arise showing the continuous inhabitation of the Municipality of Heraklion region. The site of Knossos is the largest and most indicative place of habitation since the prehistoric times, in Crete.

In every village in the Hinterland of the municipality of Heraklion is rendered tribute to the fallen heroes and there are the respective Monuments.

Outside of the Gorgolaini Monastery, the visitor encounters the effigy of St. George.

The alone (amonachos) oak is located in Kato Asites.

In the yard of the monastery of St. George Gorgolaini can be seen the bust and the brave chieftain's Tomb of the comrade of Captain Korakas, Francisco Mastrachas who at the age of 75 years, died in 1868 in τηε battle against the Turks in Asites.
