CHURCH OF ST IOANNIS IN ROUKANI

An important monument of the Second Byzantine period in Crete, Agios Ioannis Church in Roukani, standing in fairly good condition. Probably belongs in a monastic edifice dedicated to Agios Ioannis Theologos and the Catholic of the monastery.

Agios Ioannis Church belongs to the type of cruciform recorded Byzantine Church, the Greek press, we encounter mainly during the 11th century in the Greek territory. The construction of St. John's requires specialized knowledge and high design architectures, which refers to assume that the manufacturers of the building came from the then capital of the Byzantine Empire, Constantinople.

In the wider area of Agios Ioannis, in the excavations of 2000, section Roman tank and found a series of tombs Venetian period whose findings confirm the functioning of space as a monastery. The site has found a leaden seal engraved with the name of Andrew, Abbot of the monastery of Roukani which today is exhibited in the historical Museum.

Today the Church is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist and is celebrated on August 29.
