CULTURAL ROUTE GIOFYROS - PANO ASITES

The proposed route follows the road Heraklion-Mesara, starting with the node of Giofyro. The node turn left and follow the signs toward Degrees. The aim of the visit is path in selected settlements of a particular geographical area with interesting residential network and common cultural and historical traits.

First stop of the route is the village 'Siva'. At 15 km the road narrows and climbs reaching the small village.

The village of Sivas extends our left and over the road axis in altitude. 280 m. a paved alley leads us in traditional districts. Here you will encounter suburban houses and mansions, rustic nature of past centuries with curved doorways and relief decoration.

West of the village we can see the mountain range of Psiloritis mountain emerges, with the imposing top Bell. A beautiful ravine with colorful nature, goes to bed on the Western side of the village. The ravine seeps the river Diakoniaris.

At the entrance of the village, we see right the frescoed Byzantine Church of Agia Paraskevi, which celebrates on July 26.

Together with the adjacent grade II listed and preserved monument of the "On Tap", and the restorations made in space, compose a space cult, art, history and natural beauties which completes the picture of Paliani Municipality. The stone laxeytes stone troughs of the fountain once served in the village's water supply. A path leads to the depth of the ravine, in the small valley of Orchards below.

Cross the village of Sivas road. At the end of the village there is a marking that informs about the impending branch that leads to the new road Heraklion-Crete.

We continue our way along the old national. On the left the road leads to the village of Dafnes located 2 km north of Venerato. Here, every year takes place the famous traditional celebration of wine. Keep (without twist) on the same axis and arrive in the village of Venerato. Here turn right towards Avgeniki and Kerasia. There is distinctively marked.

In the small valley of Venerato and the surrounding hills, there are dozens of large and small temples, with frescos, ruins of old monasteries, chapels, with legends for ascetics and saints.

The village Avgeniki is located on the southwest side of Venerato, situated on the Hill peak, 310m Kefa. The settlement, characterized by the cultured tells, Apetonia, Moyschato (South), Lakia, heart and Romanos (East) while the West rise the Asitianes slopes.

Going the road of the village, we see the old church of the assumption with a festival that celebrates on August 15. The surrounding hills are seeing other chapels and among the vineyards. North of Aygeniki is the village Kerasa. View among the olive groves and vineyards, with a background of the "Red Western" Deti.

The noble dwellings tiled give a particular color in the area. The settlement is built amphitheatrically below the Kerasano peak in Cypress Hill 340m.

The village is the Church of Agios Georgios with interesting carvings. On the north side of the village is the large church of zoodochos pigi. The renovated building of the former primary school, hosts in the precincts of the grave of Captain Charalambos Vlachaki who acted against the Ottomans. Northwest of the village, located in box canyon the deserted Church of "Panagia Faneromeni".

The area is characterized by large planes and be formatted and suitable for recreation. There next, over at koyskoyrobracho, we have carved a sculpture, creation of local artist.

We return to the village where in western direction, approximately 2 km uphill to the site Vlachiana. There in street detour left, lies the Church of Michael the Archangel. Retains traces of wall paintings. From here we see panoramic views across the area of the Malevisi-Heraklion. Returning to the road, continue West and cross the Eastern root of psiloritis. The road leads us in Kato Asites (belongs to the old municipality of Gorgolaini). Thence in a southerly direction passing the traditional settlement Over Asites.
