Agios Syllas

Famous village of "Parakandias" with a rich history and tradition. It is 14 km from Heraklion and is built on an altitude of 569 meters on the Western outskirts of Youchtas "besieged" by many vineyards and olive groves. Most residents of the village are the refugee origin.

In 1305 and the earliest mention of the village, delivered the information that there are two old churches, Agios Silas (Agio Sila) and Mary (Santa Maria) which were destroyed by the earthquake of 1303 and reconstructed from the Rogerius de Rogerios with the help of residents.

Sure it can be seen that the settlement is a 13th-century older and goes back to the second Byzantine period of Crete, but archaeological finds in the place "Koytsoyrelia" where discovered Hellenistic and Roman pottery indicate that the settlement "comes from the prochristianiki era.

The old village as evidenced by the sources and the ruins of the temple Saint John located in the place "Perdikonero" (referred to in the code of Sinaitiko 1583) was destroyed by the Turks in 1645 (shortly before the start of the siege of Candia).

The German occupation of the inhabitants of the village with their Samareitides, who developed a great partisan action, while on the periphery of the village lies the known history of "Chamamoytzi cave" where the summer of 1941 was the swearing in of the first group of "national resistance" (history). Equally interesting is the visit to the "old bridge" in place "Agios Syllas" Hani.

The modern village has traditional dining venues, nice cafes and offers long day accommodation in rooms (Muses). Very good also the Festival is organized every year on the eve of the Patron Saint Silas on 29 July by the cultural Association of the borough.
