For the first time mentioned the name of a notarial document 1271 and thereafter in many documents and other notaries and of the Ducal file. Recorded and all the censuses held in Crete from 1577 until today.
It is a traditional village walls type (like Petrokefalo), with a perimeter of old stone buildings, and a significant number of buildings of architectural interest, such as the churches of Agios Ioannis, Agios Georgios and flour mills of Kazola area.
Other important historical and archaeological places are preserved in the village such as the Church of St. John with the emblem of the Franciscan Catholic monks (1601), the renovated Church of our Lady (maybe the 10th or 11th century) who burned the Ottomans in 1866, the Church of Agios Georgios the Mesampelitis in place of overlapping scales that are grinded in precincts, pots and clay pipes for channelling of wort at wine warehouses which stood 500 m southwest of the village.
Interesting points of hiking paths and natural beauty with relatively easy or difficult to access, is the cave of Mertzani (difficult to access), the Trialwni mill, the Mill of Epitideios and interesting post «Chrisopigi» in which, according to tradition, the monastery which had existed as a dependency of the Monastery of Gorgolaini today.
The village Festival is on the 15th of August and is dedicated to the feast of our Lady (Dormition of the Theotokos). But the event is preceded by cultural association on 12 and 13 August where offered traditional meatless dishes.
But delicious dishes and delicacies can be enjoyed daily visitors in the traditional restaurant – restaurant and hangout in village cafes .
